In order to remain in compliance with new Federal Department of Transportation natural gas pipeline inspection and safety standards, Piedmont Natural Gas will be installing a new pipeline in the southern part of Davidson County. In order to help determine the actual route for the new pipeline, Piedmont Natural Gas will be conducting a land survey and assessment study. Listed below are some frequently asked questions (FAQs) from property owners about the survey and assessment.

Why is the route through a portion of Radnor Lake State Natural Area considered less intrusive than alternative routes?

There are several reasons why this route is less intrusive than other alternatives that might have been considered:

  • Impact on property owners - - the route through a small portion of RLSNA will result in significantly fewer property owners being impacted by the pipeline (approximately 50 – 100 fewer property owners); in addition, alternative routes would have added slightly over 2 additional miles of piping;
  • Impact on the environment - - the route through RLSNA will be directionally drilled – not “open-trenched” – for all but approximately 300 – 400 feet of the nearly 6,000 foot length. In fact, the average depth of the pipeline below the surface of the ground will be approximately 100 feet. This will greatly minimize any necessary clearing along the route and, for the vast majority of the pipeline route, eliminate digging on the surface of the ground.
  • Impact on local traffic / infrastructure - - alternatives to RLSNA route would have required significant disruption over an extended period of time to two of Nashville’s busiest stretches of non-interstate roads: Old Hickory Blvd between I-65 and Franklin Circle; OH Blvd. between I-65 and Franklin Pike;
