Pipeline Safety

Environmental Protection

Piedmont Natural Gas takes its environmental stewardship responsibilities seriously and emphasizes the use of sustainable business practices as one of its core business strategies. Some of Piedmont’s recent accomplishments with respect to sustainability and environmental stewardship include:

  • The achievement of GOLD LEED status for its Tennessee Resource Center;
  • The achievement of SILVER LEED status for its Tarboro (NC) Resource Center;
  • The construction of five natural gas vehicle refueling stations throughout its three-state service area with plans for an additional five stations by the end of 2012, one of which will be sited in Nashville;
  • The use of more than 100 natural gas vehicles in the Company’s own fleet with plans to convert up to one-third of its entire fleet;
  • The preservation of designated wetlands at Piedmont’s Tennessee Resource Center.

Piedmont’s commitment to environmental stewardship extends to its construction activities and management practices as well. As a normal practice on pipeline projects such as the South Nashville Pipeline project, Piedmont:

  • Engages environmental consultants to help ensure that all established permitting requirements are followed;
  • Engages archaeologists as needed to assist with avoidance and protection of cultural sites including ancient gravesites and cemeteries;
  • Engages outside consultants to assist with erosion control and follows best-practices;
  • Maintains open and timely communication with customers to ensure understanding of project and land restoration efforts;
  • Restores affected property to original condition; seeks to enhance and make property conditions better where possible.
